Purim & Hanukkah: Biblical Celebrations Beyond Leviticus 23

Purim, one of the most joyous holidays on the Jewish and Biblical calendar, commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people from Haman’s plot as recorded in the Book of Esther. One of the central commandments of Purim is the seudatPurim, the festive meal, which is a time of joyous feasting, communal gathering, and thanksgiving to God.

The more we examine the liturgical calendar parallel to Yahweh’s Biblical calendar, the more apparent it is that the liturgical calendar is an imitation. Furthermore, many liturgical and minor celebrations within the liturgical year are undergirded in paganism. 

Since Purim 2025 and Mardi Gras are happening within 10 days of each other, we should examine the parallels between Purim and Mardi Gras.

Our family believes firmly that the Bible provides us with more than enough celebrations that we do not need to covet world celebrations. Our daughter will not crave or feel as though she missed out on Halloween, for example, because we have the Biblical celebration of Purim. We get to dress up, give and receive gifts, enjoy a Purim play or interesting, narrated, and interactive reading of the entire Book of Esther, and have a party. 

Any celebrations in the Holy Scripture that is commanded, instituted, or celebrated by Yeshua, all His followers must do just that: follow Him. So, yes. If Hanukka is Biblical, Christians should celebrate it. Let’s dive deep into the Biblical and historical roots of Hanukkah.
