Divine Judgment and the First Passover
In the final plague of the exodus of Israel from the land of Egypt, Adonai went through the households of Egypt and pronounced judgment on all the people by striking down the firstborn of each home, both man and beast (Exodus 11:4–5). Only those households that had applied the blood of a lamb to the doorposts and crossbeams of their homes were spared of Yahweh’s judgment (Exodus 12:7).
The blood of the lamb in the Exodus account served as a divine sign of protection, marking those who trusted in God so that His judgment would pass over them.
The Lord had given His people Israel—and all who would join them (Exodus 12:38)—the blood of the lamb to make atonement for their souls (Leviticus 17:11). The life of the lamb took the place of the lives of all who put their faith in Yahweh so that instead of the people being slain in judgment, it was the lamb that died.
The Final Judgment: From Egypt’s Plagues to Revelation’s Wrath
Adonai judged Egypt during this historical event of the first Passover, and He has told us that He will come again to judge the living and the dead (2 Timothy 4:1). Just as He sent plagues on the land of Egypt, the Lord will again send plagues on the earth as part of His judgment for sin (Revelation 9:1–20).
During this time, how will anyone escape the consequences of these plagues? By a different kind of Lamb.
Behold the Lamb of God: Yeshua as the Fulfillment of Passover
John the Immerser, when he saw Yeshua walking among the crowd, called out, saying, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). The apostle Paul, writing to the body of believers in Corinth, said by the Holy Spirit, “For Messiah, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed.” (1 Corinthians 5:7).
Just as the blood of an innocent lamb protected the lives of all believers during the final plague of the exodus, now the blood of Yeshua protects—and will protect—any who believe in Him from the just penalty for their sins.
The Blood That Saves: How Messiah Protects Us From Wrath
The apostle Paul writes:
“For rarely will anyone die for a righteous man—though perhaps for a good man someone might even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Messiah died for us. How much more, then, having now been set right by His blood, shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him.” (Romans 5:7–9)
Yeshua’s blood shields us. It protects us. As believers, when the Lord comes in judgment to our homes in the last days, He will see the blood of our righteous Messiah and pass over us. Yeshua’s blood has been given instead of ours. He is our Passover Lamb.
Why Jesus is Our Passover Lamb: A Messianic Parallel
We see the parallels between the Passover lamb and the Lamb of God in that their blood substitutes for the life of the believer. Yeshua represents the ultimate substitution in God’s final judgment.
But how else does God point to His Son, Yeshua, as the “Lamb of God,” as John the Immerser cried out?
Prophetic Timing: Yeshua’s Arrival in Jerusalem and the Passover Timeline
One way is through the timeline of events concerning Yeshua’s final week before His death. John, in his gospel account, points out that five days before the Passover, Yeshua came to Jerusalem (John 12:12).
At first glance, this may seem insignificant until we consider God’s instructions in Exodus 12. There, the Lord commands: “Tell the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month [Nisan], each man is to take a lamb for his family…”(Exodus 12:3). That lamb was to be slaughtered on the fourteenth day—five days later (Exodus 12:6).
John’s gospel shows that Yeshua entered Jerusalem exactly five days before Passover—a perfect prophetic fulfillment of the timeline for the selection of the lamb.
Examining the Lamb: Yeshua’s Trials and the Test of Innocence
What happened in those five days between His entrance into Jerusalem and the Passover?
God’s instruction to bring the lamb into the home five days before sacrifice had a divine purpose: the lamb was to be examined to ensure it was “without blemish” (Exodus 12:5).
During those days, Yeshua was examined by the religious leaders. They questioned Him about taxes (Matthew 22:15–22), marriage in the resurrection (Matthew 22:23–33), and more. He was also put on trial before the High Priest (John 18:12–14) and then before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate.
He Passed the Test: Yeshua Declared Innocent Before His Sacrifice
After his examination of Yeshua, Pilate declared:
“See, I am bringing Him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” (John 19:4)
Yeshua was declared innocent—the perfect Lamb, without blemish. Yet the crowd demanded His death. As the High Priest Caiaphas unknowingly prophesied:
“It is better for one man to die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” (John 11:51)
Yeshua had been examined. And He was put forth to be sacrificed.
The Ultimate Question: Have You Accepted Yeshua as Your Passover Lamb?
Yeshua is the Passover Lamb, and His sacrifice covers and protects all who put their faith in Him. He died to take the place for our sins and to cover us from the wrath of God.
